June 2021 workshop

This online workshop was organised by the Impact dialogues working group.

The workshop was held on Monday 14 June, 8-11am (Brisbane time). This virtual workshop was part of the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress 2021 (SRI2021) which will ran from 13-15 June.

The workshop addressed the topic “Promoting success for sustainability research in the Oceania region,” and the following keynote address by Chris Boone (Dean, College of Global Futures, Arizona State University, USA) provided background for the workshop (Youtube; 17 min video):

The workshop focused on identifying and discussing values and principles to guide the future of leadership for sustainability transformations, and developing the basis for a manifesto based on these principles.

There were activities to provide workshop participants with opportunities to reflect on leadership values and how these might be codified into a set of principles. In addition to the pre-recorded presentation, there was a panel discussion and group work to improve understanding of how transformed leadership might better equip our organisations as agents of change.

The workshop built on themes developed in a recent paper “Creating leadership collectives for sustainability transformations” (Care et al Sustainability Science (2021) 16:703–708; https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11625-021-00909-y), which argues for a new leadership model that incorporates critical refection, inclusivity and care, as a prerequisite for the shift from disciplinary to inter- and trans-disciplinary research, necessary if we are to achieve sustainable outcomes for the planet. This paper was assigned as pre-workshop reading.

This paper is referred to in Chris Boone’s video, along with two papers written by a global network of leaders of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research organisations:
