It is noteworthy that Margaret Palmer played a key role in the activities which eventually led to the formation of NITRO-Oceania. In 2017 she encouraged Gabriele Bammer to apply for a National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) Foundation grant to organise (with Jon Kramer) the first global meeting of leaders in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary organisations. Twenty leaders attended the meeting in March 2018 (see https://nitro-oceania.net/global-network/) and four of those leaders then went on to found NITRO-Oceania.
